German production company Filmgalerie 451 produces in co-operation with Opus Film and Tempus Film from Łódź a historical feature film called "The Captain" ("Der Hauptmann"). The film is directed by Robert Schwentke.
The production is based on true events which took place at the end of the Second World War in Germany. 19-year-old Willi Herold, dressed in a stolen captain’s uniform, gathers a group of German deserters and travels with them through disintegrating Nazi Germany, pillaging whatever they can find. Finally, they reach a POW camp which is bombarded by the British.
Robert Schwentke is a German director, who after a successful Hollywood career ("Red," "The Divergent Series: Insurgent," "The Divergent Series: Allegiant") returns to Europe to produce "The Captain," written by the director himself.
The filming will take place from the 10th of February to the 10th of April 2017 in the area of Zgorzelec and Wrocław. The production is supported by German regional film funds: Filmförderungsanstalt (FFA), Bundesbeauftragter für Kultur und Medien (BKM), Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM), Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB), MFG Baden-Württemberg, and the Polish Film Institute.
